For Christmas, I got a Canon 17-40 f/4 L. I took it to Muir Beach to give it a little test run, and I absolutely love it. The above is, of course, taken with the lens - I've found that it vignettes more than I'd expect out of an L lens, but the color, saturation, and sharpness are terrific.
It is also way more flare resistant than I'd thought - yes, if you look closely there is a little flare in the above photo, but given how close to the sun I was shooting, I think it is pretty remarkable. F/4 gives me a little worry for low-light situations, but for the price I don't think it can be beat.
